Tips on Picking the Right Tarot Reader

Impromptu reading for a friend.

Getting a tarot reading is a lot of fun. There are a lot of readers out there (including me) and we’re all ready to help you. Before you go in for your first reading, look over these tips to find the right reader for you.

Knowledge. First and foremost, you may want to do some homework and research some of the other readers in your area. Online search engines and social media are a great start to finding readers around the world. Your local New age, or pagan, bookstores may host in-store readers for you to choose from and display many brochures and business cards from other readers. Collect all the information you can find. Do they seem to share your beliefs of what the cards can do for you? How long have they been working with the cards? Are they new to reading or have they read the cards for quite a while? Many Tarotists post a page of testimonials from past clients. This is useful to gleam information about a reader’s style of reading and what help they’ve provided to people in the past. There are many types of readers with many types of styles. You may want to understand a reader’s background and techniques to make sure you’re finding a person who’s compatible with your style of learning.

Cost. The next thing you’ll want to find out is the range the reader offers for their readers. In Portland, Oregon these rates can be as low as $20 for a half hour, or $40 for an hour. Some readers also offer sliding scales or discounts.

Expectations. Tarot Readers help people just like your health care professionals. As such, there will always be certain expectations from both you and your reader. The best way to get the most out of your reading session is to tell your reader what you expect to know or learn. Be upfront and forthright in this. If they cannot meet your expectations, they may offer to refer you to someone else who is better suited to address your concerns. Likewise, your reader may expect certain information or behavior out of you during your session. For example, before I meet with my clients, I always try and get their birthdate information so that I can understand what energies are going on around them and can try and tailor responses to their goals better. I also expect my clients to be truthful, open, and willing to try new things and ideas. Setting expectations and knowing what you are getting into can relieve fear and can pave the way for a wonderful relationship with a Tarot reader and the cards from the very start.

Psychic ability. Not all Tarot readers are mind readers. While we can read the cards for you and for ourselves, we may not understand how the information will relate to your life unless you help provide the context. A Tarot reading is a two way street, which involves a dialog between you and your reader who are discussing the symbolism and meanings of the cards. When I read for others, I allow you to speak and we interpret the cards with your language. After all, this is your reading. It’s important to me as your guide to use your own symbols, language, and patterns with the cards. Be ready to help your reader by giving them as much information they need to help you out. I do not consider myself a psychic. The information I give from the cards are given from the years that I have studied with them, worked with them, and the input I received from my clients. Sometimes, I get statements or thoughts in my head that seem like they come from somewhere else, but I do not get them all the time, and it doesn’t mean that I am a true psychic.

Finally, there is one more question that you need to prepare yourself for. Are you really ready to hear what is said? From my experience, not all Tarot readings go “as planned.” Something as a simple “who is my love?” can turn into a deep dark discussion about an event that happened in your family while you were a child. When these sorts of things come up, you need to mentally prepare yourself for it. Sometimes the Tarot doesn’t tell you what you want to hear, it tells you what you need to know.

When all is said and done, you should leave a good reading experience feeling like you have the answers, hope and some control over the issue or concern that bought you to seeking advice from a Tarot reader in the first place. You might not always leave with the answers you were hoping for but you should be able to use the information from the reading to lay out a road map for you to reach you goals.

PantheaCon Day Two

This morning started off a bit on the wonky side. Discovered our room shower puts out very little hot water, so instead of enjoying a soothing shower, I had a shivering one. But I was not going to let this change the mood I’ve been in for con. I meandered down and ate a protein-rich breakfast in preparation for a day of tarot readings, blood donations, the workshop I was looking forward to, and whatever else the day brought.

As soon as the vending room opened I had my first reading customer. I love reading the cards for clients. I love the variety of questions they ask me. I love how courageous they are when the cards give them the space to open up and really get to the core of what is going on in their world. And I love how adventurous people are when I get creative with the cards on their behalf.

Alas, my reading hour was up faster than I wanted. The second thing I did today was fulfill my blood donation appointment. I arrived early, filled out all the paperwork, and then had to be turned away due to a two-tenths lower white blood count. Drat! I was so hoping to do this. It’s been awhile since I’ve given. Darn my immune system and being sick earlier this month.

Feeling dejected, I went back to our booth in the vendor room for hugs. I then helped customers play with and explore the tarot decks and oracle systems we had on hand. We had several guest authors show at our site, so I got to chat with them and re-connect.

I attended the 3:30 Tarot Magic workshop with Chic and Tabitha Cicero. Billed as a way to sample the variety of ways one could do magic with tarot (from rituals to spells to talismans and meditations) this was THE class I was looking to most this weekend. The room filled up fast and I was lucky enough to get a spot next to a friend. Chic started us off with a Middle Path meditation which helped ground and center me. He then launched into a written presentation on the connections between Tarot and magic, the universe, and focus. He reminded us that the tarot was so much more than a divination deck and that we all have the power to really manifest whatever it was we wanted in the world. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to experience the hands-on bits of the class but I did find it very illuminating and interesting.

I talked to the Ciceros for a bit after their class and they told me that everything that was “hands on” practice could be found in their book Tarot Talismans. So, now I have something to look forward to when I get home. I also picked up an anthology of Golden Dawn essays on divination techniques that featured a lot of rituals and magic techniques.

I finished my day back in the Vendor room, selling more products. Two of my hand crafted tarot cases sold and I also got to meet Glenn, the ringmaster of this whole production (by way of my Uncle Mike, who attends this convention as well).

Spent the evening out in the main lobby with a table full of old and new friends. Drew entertained us by reading from Courtney Weber’s Tarot of the Bouroughs, the deck of New York that she created. She entertained us with “out-take” stories of the deck’s production and her deck got blessed by Rachel Pollack.

All in all, it was a great way to spend my second day at PantheaCon. I go to bed now, with my spirit feeling full and happy.

PantheaCon Day One

Day one of PantheaCon is winding down, so I thought I’d sneak in a few time to write down my thoughts on today’s journey. I set my alarm for a hearty 6am and wandered downstairs during the pre-con hours to get some internet time in. Around 7am I was greeted by my friends for our breakfast meal. I slurped down tons of Orange Juice and had eggs, bacon, and a muffin.

The Vending Hall opened for us Vendors an hour or so later, so we schlepped the products and booth materials from our room down to the ballroom. We set up the Tarot Media Company booth in record time, and had several hours to spare. We used that time to chat, create a game plan, and figure out which events we all wanted to do throughout the rest of the days.

A half-hour before the doors opened to the general populous, I ran down to Lauren Raine’s booth and handed her the “I AM a Goddess, ALL are the goddess,” book that Char put together for her. All of us goddessi wrote inscriptions in it and we enclosed a copy of the soundtrack and a poem from it. I got a bit teary eyed when I presented the book to Lauren, and told her how much having worn the Lilith mask changed my life. We bonded almost instantly and she told me more about her current mask-making journeys. We promised to connect again later this weekend.

I spent the next three hours sharing the Tarot Media Company’s products with attendees and having good conversations with many of them. I signed up for two hours of tarot readings and, while my table was empty, I handed out some business cards and had several more good discussions. Several people asked me about my class on Monday. A good sign indeed.

At 5pm, I met a very special pagan in the foyer for a hearty meal, my Uncle Mike (from my partner’s side of the family). He treated me to a special steak meal as we talked about our beliefs, what had been going on in the past several months for us, and I learned a bit more about some the history behind my husband’s family.

We departed happy and I made my way to the Circle of Cerridwen’s hospitality suite for a special class presented by Calyxa Omphalos on an Oracle Card CoCreation Ritual. Attendees were asked to make some symbols on blank cards, which were then photographed. We then went around in a spider web circular fashion and “read” from the oracle answers to questions people asked. During the creation process I designed 4 cards. Two of my favorites were “the grumpy cat” card and “a triple moon aspect” card. Calyxa told us that she would take the photos of our designs and compile them into a real oracular deck that we could purchase later this year. It’s being released under a Creative Commons license.

Surprisingly, but also not surprisingly, the cards were spot on and in a few cases those who asked questions also received their own card. We cheered when someone received “the grumpy cat” card and laughed at the implications it brought.

All in all, it was a grand night and I post this entry feeling excited, happy, elated and looking forward to what tomorrow holds! Good night dear readers and have a great evening.

Pre-PantheaCon Musings

Happy Valentine’s Day dear readers! This is the first year I’ve flown into this convention and I must say it was awesome. My flight arrived 20 minutes early, and I lucked out by grabbing a shuttle to the hotel almost immediately upon exiting the terminal. There were no long lines to wait in, so I promptly got my room and was greeted by the rest of the PDX entourage.

This was the first time I got to really experience the transformation of the hotel from normal, every day activities to the wonders that is PantheaCon. I sat, in the lobby for most of the evening giving hugs, laughing, creating new memories, and feeling like I came home again.

After dinner and the departure of two good friends, I retired to my room to get settled in and get a “good night” sleep before the craziness of the rest of the convention.

I can’t wait to see what the first day holds! Stay tuned and hang onto your hats. 🙂

Leaving for San Jose Soon

It’s time for my first trip of the year, the annual pilgrimage to PantheaCon in San Jose. In just a few hours, I’ll be on a plane headed to their airport. Then a short bus to the DoubleTree Hotel and my room. PantheaCon is an amazing experience for me, as I get to teach, help out my friends at Tarot Media Company, and network with my peers.

Are you going? Best way to find me is to seek me out at the Tarot Media Company booth, grab a reading from me, or attend my class on Becoming a Tarot Professional on Monday! I’ll also be on my twitter account (@jaymi_elford) with the hashtag #pantheacon.

See you all in a few hours. Happy Valentine’s Day to you all, as well.
